How to improve mental health! There’s more to mental health than you might think; your entire well-being depends on how well your mental health happens to be.

The benefits of having a healthy state of mind are obvious; you feel relaxed, content and happy with where and who you are. It’s not always that simple to just, ‘be happy’ and to live in a constant state of mind where you feel amazing every day; but, what we can do is practice and exercise our minds to think positively every day.

Here are 10 simple ways to improve your Mental Health:

1. Practice gratitude daily

No matter how dark your current situation may be, if you were to look around and think about your blessings, you may just find them. Think daily about who and what you are grateful for, take time to consult yourself on the good in your life; your friends, your family or even yourself. It’s the small things that count, you just need to think about them to appreciate just what they may be helping you with and doing for you.

Find three things a day that you are grateful for and write them down. Practicing gratitude on a daily basis can help rewire your brain in a positive way.

2. Talk positively to yourself

The impact of viewing and talking to yourself negatively is considerable, it can bring you down. It’s time to start getting your own back when no one else will. Positive affirmations are a great way to start talking positively to yourself, remind yourself of the good qualities you have on a consistent basis, you will feel better! Start believing in yourself, and slowly, others will too, it takes time and patience, so, in order to have a healthy mind and mental health you need to start thinking positively, about yourself, to yourself.

3. Focus on the present moment

A lot of people become very anxious if they worry about the future, and many people can become very depressed if they dwell on the things that went on in their past. The best way to combat this is to focus on the present and be in the moment. Focus on your current surroundings and take in what’s around you, the colors, the textures, the smells. This will help you stay in the moment which will be beneficial to your current state of mind.

4. Exercise

It is quite true that staying active consistently will help improve your mental health. Exercise brings out endorphins which are the happy chemical, and this is often a regimen that psychiatrists and psychologists suggest to their patients in order to help them maintain good mental health.

If you notice how good you feel after a 30minute workout, the endorphins have been released and are starting to have a positive effect on you. The bottom line is that exercise is excellent for your mental health.

5. Focus on healthy eating

If you are consistently eating foods that are processed, packed with sugar or trans fats then this is only going to have a negative impact on your mental health in addition to your physical health.

In order to improve your mental health, you need to eat a healthy balance of protein, complex carbs which include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, as well as healthy fats such as avocados and olive oil. This will help to maintain a balance of the chemicals in your brain in addition to being good for your physical health. What you eat makes can make a huge difference to your overall mental health.

6. Volunteer your time

Volunteer your time to those in need, this will help take your mind off of your own problems while you are helping someone else with theirs. You can go to a homeless shelter or animal shelters to help out in ways that they need the most. If you make time to do this, even just once a week, you will feel better. Overtime you may find that there are others who are suffering and that your time to help them out is valuable and may help to improve their mental health as well, overtime.

7. Don’t bottle things up

If you are having a hard time, the worst thing that you can do is bottle your feelings up. It is essential to open up to someone who you can trust, whether this is a therapist or a trusted family member, or even a close friend. When you open up to right people, you’ll find most people want the best for you and to help; sometimes, this can take a lot a weight off your shoulders to know that people are willing to help.

8. Take breaks when needed

If you are becoming too stressed because of life being very hectic or you are having a rough time, take a break! We are not machines; we need to time to reflect and recuperate. Read a book, meditate, embark on a life journey and start doing the things you love; and, if you don’t know what they are, find out! Your mental health and work-life balance depends on it.
